Mimmo Catania


Mimmo Catania is an Italian painter and multidisciplinary artist, renowned for his innovative "meta-realism," a style that explores the intersection of reality and collective memory. Born in Vittoria, Sicily, in 1955, he studied painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino from 1980 to 1984. Since 1984, he has lived and worked in Berlin, a city that profoundly influences his artistic approach.

Catania’s work reflects a deep engagement with themes of identity, spirituality, and human experience. He experiments with diverse materials and techniques to create artworks that challenge perceptions and evoke introspection. His practice spans painting, sculpture, and installation, often blending conceptual depth with aesthetic complexity.
Catania has received numerous prestigious grants and fellowships, including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2005, 2016), a residency at the Casa di Goethe in Rome (1998-1999), and a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant (2007). These opportunities have allowed him to work and exhibit internationally in venues across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
His extensive exhibition history includes solo shows at institutions such as the Santa Fe Art Institute (2007), the Zendai Museum of Modern Art in Shanghai (2008), and the Torrance Art Museum in California (2015). Group exhibitions include participation in the 49th and 55th Venice Biennales, showcasing his global impact.
